The Original Irish Coffee
There are a number of Irish Coffee recipes available on the Internet and elsewhere. Most of them are close to the original, but I still have one that really see binding.
What makes me such an expert? A branch of my family invented this wonderful mix of black coffee, Irish whiskey and cream, which was always thought to resemble a glass of Guinness.
It was created by my distant cousin Joe Sheridan in the first half of last century, while he was employed asSteward at Shannon Airport, Ireland.
He would have been an uncle about four times removed.
Today, there are special glasses for the delivery be made, and there is also a commercial version called Sheridan's, which I like to think, was named in his honor.
This is the original, traditional, mix and how to pass on me in my part of the family:
Place a teaspoon of demerara sugar came in the bottom of a glass that is large enough to hold a cup of coffee.
Adda measure of Irish whiskey, which could be Paddy, Bushmills or Jameson's. The original is assumed that paddy were from County Cork distillery.
Pour into a cup of hot coffee on the back of a spoon to avoid to mix with a cracked glass, and.
Now cool (the spoon or use a clean) and pour in come very cold enough double (heavy) cream over the back of it to the top of the glass. Do this carefully and be clear of coffee topped with ice creamcool cream.
Do not whip the cream, simply stir a little, or shake the carton before opening to ensure it pours evenly.
The effect is as if you had Guinness in the glass. Serve it with pride, it has a long and honorable tradition.
